Two Minute Silence on Novembre 11th

mercoledì 11 novembre 2009

Some hopeful statistics for you. The Royal British Legion has commissioned a survey on the importance of the Two Minute Silence on November 11th. Positively, 94% of the public said that it’s important to continue to observe the Silence - despite the passing of Harry Patch this year, the last remaining British veteran to have seen active service in the First World War.

Among those aged between 35-44 years old, support for the Silence is nearly universal at 99%, and amongst the youngest - the 16-24 year olds - 94% feel the same. I hope this is because they can appreciate how relevant the Silence continues to be with ongoing conflict in Afghanistan. After all,the Silence is now just as much for the Afghan generation as it is for the Armistice generation.

The Two Minute Silence was first observed 90 years ago when King George V felt that it should be held on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1919 to coincide with the signing of the Armistice a year earlier. This is a tradition the Legion will be continuing tomorrow, when they’ll be holding two mass participation Silences - one in Swansea’s Castle Square and one in London’s Trafalgar Square, supported by artists such as Stephen Fry, Athlete, Bonnie Tyler and Mark Knopfler.

Many people often want to observe the Silence but don’t know where to do it - please do tell everyone you know to head on over to either square tomorrow by 11am gmt!
